The Waterfall
Superbly located in 500 acres of rolling
Sussex downland, Mannings Heath Golf Club has two championship
courses that are at the forefront of ‘must play’ golf hot-spots in
the UK.
With the undisputed
expertise of designer David Williams, who worked with and
manipulated dramatic topography, these are thoughtfully created
courses. Step up to the first tee and allow yourself
a moment, there is no rush. Absorb the breathtaking surroundings,
four to five hours of supreme pleasure lies ahead.
Jewel in the
crown…
Established in 1905 the Waterfall course, the
jewel in the crown of Sussex golf, is set amongst acres of mature
deciduous woodland and streams with patchwork fairways.
Due to the location in 500 acres of rolling
Sussex downs, the course is a hybrid, a mix of heathland, downland
and parkland and provides golfers with an exciting and entertaining
course which holds the interest all the way round.
A fair test for every caliber of golfer
Measuring 6,683 yards
from the tips, several of the holes are wonderfully testing,
demanding accuracy from the tee. There is a lovely feeling of
seclusion, created by the mature trees, the dramatic undulating
terrain and streams which wind their way alongside 11 of the lush
fairways.
The par 72 course presents a fair test of golf
to every caliber of golfer - a combination of nature’s work
and the efforts of a professional and hard working green-keeping
team.
The highlights
The 1st tee is set in the shadow of the gorgeous 17th century
clubhouse and it’s a spectacular and daunting prospect. From the
elevated tee, a long and accurate drive over a wooded valley is the
order of the day.
The 2nd is a very short par four, but this comes too early in
the round for most of us to take too much advantage.
The 5th is one of the most dramatic one-shot holes in Sussex
with an elevated tee shot to a green set in a most unusual
punchbowl. It heralds the beginning of a fine run of
holes. In fact, it is the par 3 holes that really give the
Waterfall its identity and the Punchbowl is the first of these
delightful challenges with a stream to the side and the front of
the green posing an additional challenge.
The ‘Blaster’ is the last of the short holes, with bunkers on
the left closely guarding the green. The ground falls away sharply
to the right into woodland and the approach to this is out of
bounds.
Famous names!
It is testament to the quality of this course
that Gary Player included the 11th hole, known as The Valley, in
his imaginary top 18 holes of golf in the world.
So come along, stand on the first tee and
allow yourself a moment, there is no rush. Absorb the
breathtaking surroundings, four to five hours of supreme pleasure
lies ahead and you are at the start of it.
